Packet loss is even nastier: even 1–2% loss makes a game feel broken, because lost packets mean the server literally never heard some of your inputs. What Causes High Ping?
- Distance to the server. Data can't beat physics. Playing on a server one continent away adds 100–150 ms you cannot remove — always pick the nearest region in the game's settings.
- Wi-Fi. Wireless adds 5–30 ms of latency and, worse, adds jitter. It's the single most common fixable cause of bad gaming connections.
- Bufferbloat. When someone else saturates your connection (cloud backup, 4K stream, big download), packets queue up in your router and ping spikes into the hundreds. Your line isn't slow — it's momentarily full.
- VPNs. Routing traffic through a VPN server adds a detour. Occasionally a VPN finds a better route, but usually it costs 10–50 ms.
