15 Practical Ways to Make Your Wi-Fi Faster at Home

Here's a frustrating truth about home internet: most "slow internet" complaints have nothing to do with the internet plan at all. The connection arriving at your modem is often fine — it's the Wi-Fi between your router and your devices that's throwing speed away. The good news is that Wi-Fi problems are usually fixable, and most fixes cost nothing.

Before you start, get a baseline. Run a speed test while standing next to your router, then run it again in the room where Wi-Fi feels worst. The gap between those two numbers tells you how much speed your Wi-Fi is losing — and how much these fixes can win back.

Free Fixes First

1. Move your router out of hiding

Wi-Fi is radio waves, and radio waves hate obstacles. A router shoved in a cabinet, behind the TV, or in a basement corner is fighting through wood, metal and concrete before it reaches you. Place it out in the open, elevated (on a shelf, not the floor), and as central to your home as the cable allows. This single change often recovers more speed than anything else on this list.

2. Get it away from interference sources

Microwaves, baby monitors, cordless phones, Bluetooth speakers and even fish tanks (water absorbs Wi-Fi signals surprisingly well) all degrade your signal. Keep at least a meter of distance between your router and anything electronic or metallic, and never put it right next to the microwave in the kitchen.

3. Use the right band: 2.4 GHz vs 5 GHz

Most routers broadcast two networks. 2.4 GHz travels farther and penetrates walls better, but it's slower and crowded — your neighbors' networks, Bluetooth and microwaves all share it. 5 GHz is much faster and cleaner but has shorter range. The rule: devices near the router (TV, desktop, console) belong on 5 GHz; distant or low-bandwidth devices (smart plugs, a phone in the garden) can live on 2.4 GHz. If your router merges both into one network name, it usually steers devices automatically — but if a nearby device is stuck on 2.4 GHz, splitting the bands into separate names lets you choose manually.

4. Reboot the router — on a schedule

It's a cliché because it works. Routers are small computers that run for months without a break; memory fills up, software glitches accumulate, and performance slowly degrades. A reboot clears all of it. If your router noticeably slows down over time, set a schedule (many routers can auto-reboot weekly at 4 a.m.) instead of waiting for problems.

5. Change your Wi-Fi channel

Wi-Fi bands are split into channels, and in an apartment building, dozens of networks may pile onto the same one — like everyone trying to talk in the same room. On 2.4 GHz, only channels 1, 6 and 11 don't overlap; a free Wi-Fi analyzer app on your phone will show which is least crowded near you. Most routers default to "auto" channel selection but choose poorly and rarely re-evaluate. Setting the channel manually in your router's admin page can noticeably smooth out a congested network.

6. Update your router's firmware

Firmware updates fix bugs, patch security holes, and sometimes improve speed and stability outright. Many people run routers on firmware that's years out of date. Log into your router's admin page (the address is usually printed on a sticker underneath) and look for an update option — newer routers can check and install automatically.

7. Kick freeloaders and forgotten devices off

Every connected device takes a slice of airtime, even idle ones. Check your router's device list: old phones, a neighbor who once got your password, smart gadgets you forgot about. Change your Wi-Fi password if anything looks unfamiliar, and use WPA2 or WPA3 security — never an open network.

8. Find and pause the bandwidth hogs

If Wi-Fi is fast at midnight but crawls at 8 p.m., something in your house may be eating the connection: cloud backups, game console updates downloading in the background, or someone streaming 4K on three screens. Many router admin pages show per-device usage in real time. Schedule big backups and updates for overnight hours.

9. Turn on QoS (Quality of Service)

QoS is a router feature that prioritizes important traffic. Enable it and tell the router that video calls and gaming come first; then a big download won't wreck your Zoom meeting. On many modern routers this is a simple toggle labeled QoS, "smart prioritization" or "adaptive QoS." It doesn't add speed, but it makes the speed you have feel dramatically better under load — especially for latency-sensitive tasks. 10. Reposition the antennas

If your router has external antennas, don't point them all straight up. Antennas radiate outward perpendicular to their direction — so one vertical and one horizontal covers both same-floor and multi-floor homes better. It's a small tweak, but it's free and takes ten seconds.

Fixes That Cost a Little

11. Use ethernet for anything that doesn't move

A cable is always faster and more stable than Wi-Fi — full stop. Desktop PCs, smart TVs, game consoles and streaming boxes near the router should be wired. Every device you move to ethernet also frees up Wi-Fi airtime for the devices that genuinely need it. A cable costs a few dollars and eliminates an entire category of problems.

12. Replace an old or ISP-issued router

If your router is more than five or six years old, it may predate Wi-Fi 5 or Wi-Fi 6 and simply cannot deliver modern plan speeds wirelessly. A 100 Mbps ceiling over Wi-Fi on a 300 Mbps plan is a classic symptom. A mid-range Wi-Fi 6 router is one of the best value upgrades in home tech, and it will comfortably serve a busy household of devices.

13. Consider a mesh system for larger homes

If your home is large, has thick walls, or spans multiple floors, no single router will cover it well. A mesh system uses two or three units placed around the home that cooperate as one network, so you get strong signal everywhere instead of one hot zone and several dead ones. Mesh beats cheap "Wi-Fi extenders," which often halve bandwidth and create separate network names your devices cling to at the wrong times.

14. Match your plan to reality

Sometimes the honest fix is admitting the plan is too small for the household — or too big. If a wired speed test shows you're getting what you pay for but evenings are still painful with six people streaming, an upgrade may be justified. 15. Know when it's the ISP's problem — and call them

If a wired speed test right at the router consistently shows far less than your plan promises — at multiple times of day — the problem is upstream of your home and no Wi-Fi trick will fix it. Document your results (dates, times, speeds), then contact your ISP with the evidence. Possible culprits include degraded lines, an outdated modem they can swap, or neighborhood congestion they need to address. Persistence with documented numbers gets far better results than "my internet feels slow."
